There was a time when people knew the names of the trees around them. They could recognize birds by their songs, follow the tracks of animals, grow food from the land, build a fire, weave a basket, and solve problems with their own hands. These weren't hobbies or specialized skills, they were simply part of everyday life.
As the world has changed, many of those traditions have quietly faded. We've become more connected through technology, yet often less connected to the natural world and to the knowledge that once helped us understand it.
The Academy of the Lost Arts was founded on a simple belief: some things are too valuable to lose.
Our mission isn't to turn back the clock. It's to carry forward the timeless skills, knowledge, and values that still have a place in modern life, curiosity, craftsmanship, stewardship, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the world around us.
We believe that nature is one of our greatest teachers. Whether we're identifying wildflowers, tracking wildlife, tending a garden, carving a spoon, learning to weave natural fibers, gathering around a campfire, or simply sitting quietly beneath an old oak tree, every experience is an opportunity to learn something about the natural world, and about ourselves.
The Academy will be a place for children, families, educators, and lifelong learners. A place where questions are encouraged, hands get dirty, and learning happens through experience rather than observation alone.
More than anything, we hope to inspire a lifelong relationship with the outdoors. Because when people understand the natural world, they're more likely to care for it. And when they learn the skills and stories of those who came before us, they're better equipped to shape the future with confidence and purpose.

Looking Ahead
The Academy of the Lost Arts is more than a place, it's a growing community built around curiosity, stewardship, and lifelong learning.
Our vision is to develop a welcoming campus where children can attend a nature-based preschool, families can gather for seasonal retreats, students can explore forests and streams, volunteers can help restore native habitats, and lifelong learners can discover traditional skills that have shaped generations.
As we grow, we hope to expand our programs to include summer camps, workshops, community gardens, wildlife education, retreats, citizen science projects, and partnerships with schools and conservation organizations.
Most importantly, we hope to inspire a deeper relationship with the natural world, one that encourages people not only to enjoy nature, but to understand it, care for it, and help preserve it for future generations.

A Letter from Our Founder
Welcome.
If you've found your way here, there's a good chance you've felt it too, that quiet pull toward the outdoors. Maybe it's the peace of a walk through the woods, the excitement of discovering something you've never noticed before, or the satisfaction of creating something with your own hands. Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came.
The idea for the Academy of the Lost Arts grew from a simple observation: many of the skills and experiences that once connected us to nature are quietly disappearing. Not because they no longer matter, but because our lives have become increasingly disconnected from the natural world.
I don't believe those traditions belong in museums or history books. I believe they belong in our lives.
The Academy was created to be a place where children can splash through streams, adults can rediscover forgotten skills, families can gather around a campfire, and neighbors can become friends. A place where curiosity is celebrated, questions are welcomed, and learning happens through experience.
Some of the most meaningful lessons I've learned didn't come from a classroom. They came while sitting quietly in the woods, watching wildlife, navigating unfamiliar landscapes, and working through challenges that required patience, creativity, and resilience. Those experiences, along with years spent studying natural history and traditional outdoor skills, have reinforced something I believe deeply: nature has an incredible ability to teach us, if we're willing to pay attention.
My hope is that this Academy becomes more than a collection of classes or events. I hope it becomes a community. A place where knowledge is shared across generations, where children grow up feeling at home outdoors, and where every visitor leaves with a greater appreciation for the world around them.
