There was a time when people knew the names of the trees around them. They recognized birds by their songs, followed the tracks of animals, grew food from the land, built fires, wove baskets, and solved problems with their own hands. These weren't hobbies or specialized skills, they were simply part of everyday life.
As the world has changed, many of those traditions have quietly faded. We've become more connected through technology, yet often less connected to the natural world and the knowledge that once helped us understand it.
The Academy of the Lost Arts was founded on a simple belief:

Nature teaches patience, resilience, curiosity, creativity, and wonder in ways no classroom can fully replicate. Traditional skills cultivate confidence, resourcefulness, and a deeper appreciation for the world around us. These lessons are as meaningful today as they have ever been.
The Academy isn't about turning back the clock. It's about carrying forward timeless knowledge and creating opportunities for people of every age to experience it firsthand.
Whether you're identifying your first wildflower, carving a spoon, tending a garden, gathering around a campfire, exploring a forest trail, or simply sitting quietly beneath an old oak tree, every experience becomes an invitation to slow down, pay attention, and reconnect.
Here, children are encouraged to ask questions. Families learn side by side. Adults rediscover forgotten skills. Curiosity is celebrated, hands get dirty, and learning happens through experience rather than observation alone.

Nature is one of our greatest teachers.
The outdoors cultivates curiosity, resilience, patience, and perspective in ways no classroom can fully replicate. Some of life's most meaningful lessons are learned with muddy boots, open eyes, and willing hands.
Learning should be lived, not simply observed.
The most lasting knowledge comes through experience, exploring a woodland trail, building a shelter, tending a garden, identifying wildlife, creating something by hand, or asking questions that don't always have immediate answers.
Traditional knowledge still has a place in modern life.
The skills passed down through generations aren't relics of the past. They continue to teach self-reliance, creativity, craftsmanship, and a deeper appreciation for the people and landscapes that came before us.
Stewardship begins with understanding.
People protect what they know, value, and love. By helping people understand the natural world, we hope to inspire a lifelong commitment to conservation and responsible stewardship.

The Academy is Founded
A vision for a place where people of all ages can rediscover nature, traditional skills, and community begins to take shape.
2025
A Permanent Home
The Academy acquires a 38-acre campus in Carroll County, Maryland and begins planning a nature-based learning center for future generations.
The Vision Takes Shape
Plans for a nature preschool, retreat center, outdoor classrooms, and community gathering spaces begin to come to life.
2025–2026
Building the Foundation
Working alongside neighbors, volunteers, and local leaders, we navigate the planning, permitting, and approval process that will allow the Academy to grow thoughtfully and responsibly.

Beginning Programs
Community events, educational programs, and the first opportunities for people to experience the Academy begin.

As the Academy grows, we hope to expand our educational programs, develop immersive learning spaces, steward the land entrusted to us, and create opportunities for people of all ages to learn, serve, and explore together.

A Note from Our Founder
Welcome,
If you've found your way here, there's a good chance you've felt it too, that quiet pull toward the outdoors. Maybe it's the peace of a walk through the woods, the excitement of discovering something you've never noticed before, or the simple satisfaction of creating something with your own hands. Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came.
The idea for the Academy of the Lost Arts grew from a simple observation: many of the skills and experiences that once connected us to nature are quietly disappearing. Not because they no longer matter, but because our lives have become increasingly busy, digital, and disconnected from the natural world.
I've been fortunate to spend much of my life exploring wild places, studying nature, and learning from remarkable mentors, communities, and experiences that deepened my appreciation for the outdoors. My experiences as a survival instructor, naturalist, and lifelong student of the outdoors have reinforced one simple truth: nature has an extraordinary ability to teach us resilience, curiosity, humility, and hope, if we're willing to pay attention.
Some of the most meaningful lessons I've ever learned didn't come from a classroom. They came while sitting quietly in the woods, tracking wildlife through fresh snow, identifying a bird by its song, navigating unfamiliar landscapes, or patiently working through the challenge of creating something with my own hands. Those experiences changed the way I see the world, and they continue to shape who I am today.
I don't believe those experiences belong only in museums, history books, or television shows. I believe they belong in our everyday lives.
The Academy was created to be a place where children splash through streams and discover salamanders beneath fallen logs. Where families gather around campfires and share stories beneath the stars. Where adults rediscover forgotten skills, neighbors become friends, and curiosity is celebrated every single day.
My hope is that this Academy becomes more than a collection of programs or events. I hope it becomes a community, a place where knowledge is shared across generations, where people feel at home outdoors, and where every visitor leaves with a deeper appreciation for the natural world and their place within it.
We're still at the beginning of this journey. Every trail, every class, every volunteer day, and every child who discovers the joy of learning outdoors helps shape what this place will become. There is still much to build, but I believe the strongest communities are built one relationship at a time.
